The first Ricoh digital compact GR

The first Ricoh GR 8mp digital model launched in 2006 was based on the design of an earlier compact GR-1 fixed focal length lens film camera. The GRD's excellent 28mm (35mm format equivalent.) f/2.4 lens and miniature CCD sensor combination proved very capable, fitting neatly and ergonomically into a tough magnesium outer shell.
Orginal GR with accessory optical viewfinder and 21mm lens adapter and hood

Version two with a 10.1mp sensor was launched in 2007. Like its predecessor, The GR II camera is only 25mm thick (1 inch approx.). Its lightweight durable body casing is also manufactured from die-cast magnesium alloy able to withstand twists, pressure and shocks. Antimagnetic shielding also suppresses electromagnetism that can cause the generation of image noise. In every detail — reliability, high-class impression, portability, sturdiness and image quality — Ricoh has aimed at creating the ultimate in terms of well balanced body design.

Tough magnesium alloy body shell used for all three GRD models

The GRIII with a marginally increased body shell size of the same material, a new CCD sensor and new lens with a two stop increase in maximum aperture to f/1.9, replaced the GRII late in 2009. The lens cell configuration also changed from 6 elements in 5 groups on the GR II to 8 in 6 on the new model.
The sensor in the GR III measures approx 7.6mm X 5.7mm ( 7.2mmX5.4mm for the GR II) with a pixel density of 23mp/cm2. Electrical and chroma noise is well supressed by a new GR III engine at ISO sensitivities from 64 to 400. The 10mp effective spec of this device also allows reasonable scope for image cropping.
The 1.6 mm and 1.8mm increase in body length and height plus a hike of 20 grams in weight make a well balanced and easily manipulated tool.
1993 - Nikon 35Ti Quartz Date

In 1993, The Nikon corporation proudly presented their new Nikon 35Ti Quartz Date 35mm film camera (36 X 24mm format) - a high quality tool sporting an elegant yet rugged look and offering great picture taking performance with Matrix metering and a built-in 35mm Nikkor lens.

The 35Ti Quartz Date's solid titanium exterior is lightweight, strong and anti-corrosive. It houses the lens barrel and focusing helicoid, both made from durable, precision aluminium alloy for consistent and reliable focusing accuracy. The titanium casing also protects the motors and camera's state of the art microelectronic CPU and ICs.

The camera was unique at the time in having a clock styled analogue display showing shutter times (2sec - 1/500th sec + 10 mins long time exposure.), aperture setting, focus, frame counterSearch Amazon.com for nikon compact camera and exposure compensation on its top deck.

The active infrared autofocus system provided unmatched precision from 0.4 meters to infinity in 833 steps. Preset focus can also be set by rotating the command dial in conjunction with the AF button. Two types of exposure mode - program auto and aperture priority - both featured Nikon's exclusive 3D Matrix Metering with a new six segment Matrix sensor. Centre weighted metering was also available.

The lens fitted is the excellent six element four group 35mm /f.8 semi wide angle Nikkor that can be found in other high quality Nikon products such as the Nikon LWAF. In the 35TiSearch Amazon.com for compact camera camera, the optical cell configuration includes one high refractive index low dispersion element to ensure edge to edge frame sharpness while the Nikon lens multicoating reduces flare and image ghosting. The diaphragm has seven aperture blades, producing nicely rounded out-of-focus effects in front of and behind the focused plane. Image distortion and chromatic aberration are minimised by locating the shutter and diaphragm separately but in close proximity in the lens barrel.

Quartz date custom functions enhanced operation allowing the user to select date imprinting at the start of a film roll or on each frame. The camera also features a selectable Panorama mode (36mm X 13mm) and featured a built-in flash unit augmented with red-eye reduction features.

We know a great deal about the Nikon F. It was not only a brilliant technical innovation, the most robust feature of which has lasted to this day, it is also swathed in myth and mystery, the stuff of which legends are made. Long before anyone ever thought it would become a collectible item, an aura clung to this camera like autumn mist clings to the surface of a warm river. It has worked the front line of countless wars and conflicts, featured in a dozen movies and made some of the greatest photographs of all time in the hands of some of the greatest photographic reporters of the 20th century. Other marques come and go, get re-invented and sometimes, bring bigger and better innovations to the market. But the F lives on, its legendary status glued to the feel of a new D3x or a D300.

During the early post war years of WWII, the remains of a once giant optical manufacturing association called Nippon Kogaku was reduced to a single plant with 1400 employees. In 1946, the company took the first steps which would later establish it as the foremost supplier of professional photographic equipment. Twenty examples of a prototype Nikon I, a 35mm rangefinder camera, were completed in September of that year. It was also the first occasion on which the word Nikon had been used; an amalgamation of NIppon KOgaku.

The camera was not a straight copy of the German Contax II on which the Nikon's body shell design is based. Nikon engineers reportedly researched and studied many types of German cameras of the period but settled on combining the best optical and mechanical aspects of the Leica and Contax while adding their own features.

Not surprisingly perhaps, considering Nikon's long history of specialised experience in optical glass making, it was the lenses for the rangefinder cameras which first captured the attention of western photographers. LIFE's David Douglas Duncan and photojournalist Horace Bristol used Nikkor lenses on their Leica and Contax Search Amazon.com for Nikon cameras to shoot Korean War assignments in the early 1950s.

Nearly 140,000 units of different rangefinder models had been made by the time the world moved on to the ubiquitous single lens reflex. Nikon kept the best design features of the rangefinder body shape and its slam-shut removeable back, the top plate layout and kinky shutter release position, adding a pentaprism, instant return mirror and the thin quilted titanium foil shutter blinds of its predecessor. When the Nikon F was launched in 1959, it was the first 35mm slr to have 100% eye level image coverage and a waist level finder and interchangeable focusing screens for different applications were easily fitted. Had its designers opted for the universal M42 screw threaded lens mount popular at the time, the Nikon F would have probably been an outstanding success when it was introduced, but they didn’t. Instead, the F got a patented, chunky stainless steel, quick change bayonet mount, the durability of which has been an unquestionable feature of all Nikon single lens reflex cameras to this day, maintaining compatibility for may older objectives with present day Nikon slrs and vice versa.

Version II of the Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Heliar lens in Leica-M mount

The introduction of the Voigtlander Bessa L in the late 1990s simultaneously launched two wide angle lenses made for it. One of these was the diminutive Super Wide 15mm f/4.5 Heliar Aspherical. Designed with a 39mm Leica screw mounting thread, it could also be used on a plethora of older screw mount rangefinder cameras. With an adapter, it fits bodies with the Leica-M, Zeiss-ZM, Voigtlander-VM and the Epson RD1-M bayonet mount. It was the first truly super wide angle lens for modern rangefinder cameras with a 110 deg picture angle and maximum aperture greater than the f/8 of the 15mm Zeiss Hologon of 1972. It is so small and light, it can be carried in a pocket without encumbrance.

Cosina Co Ltd., of Japan launched a modified design of this lens early in 2009, offering improved user control while retaining the small and compact concept by applying its perceptions of older philosophies of form and function. Obtaining a sharp motif with the original lens was rarely a problem because of its great depth of field latitude, even at maximum aperture. However, improved focus accuracy for close range objects is always useful so a rangefinder coupled distance measurement cam has been neatly engineered into a tight space and linked to a much improved focus ring with finger tab.

This new version of the Heliar has a fixed Leica-M bayonet mount and sports a touchy-feely raised red button on the lens barrel to facilitate mounting in the dark. Another excellent modification of the new design is a 10mm front barrel diameter increase to allow the fitting of 52mm filters. The reshaping also enabled the designer to increase the diameter of the aperture setting ring just behind the petal shaped hood, giving it coarse serrated sides for improved thumb and finger control.

With a minimum aperture of f/22, the new Heliar uses the same eight element six group optical cell arrangement of its predecessor. A close inspection of the front and rear element groups of both objectives with a powerful halogen lamp reveals a subtle difference in the colour of coating reflections. The rear element of the new lens also appears, in side by side comparison, to be sited a millimeter or so further back than in the first model, a result perhaps of the engineering required for the inclusion of the rangefinder coupling cam. In practice, observable image improvements for the new glass seems slight; contrast is up a tad and the yellow content of whites is lower, marginally, than in renderings made with the old lens. The real benefits are in the much improved ergonomics and the ability finally, to mount a protective filter on this new Heliar.Search Amazon.com for Voigtlander Bessa cameras
